Company Information
CommSys History

In 1989, Robert Turner, president, and two others formed CommSys, Incorporated, a privately held corporation headquartered in Dayton, Ohio. The company's focus was to provide services and systems to the technical computing environments, primarily in Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. At that time, those areas were transitioning from proprietary systems to open systems based platforms requiring network integration. Our knowledge of networking technology and Unix systems was in great demand during that transition.

CommSys's networking technology and software knowledge formed the basis of a partnership with the leading provider of CATV Engineering services in 1992. This partnership brought CommSys's technology savvy to new arenas, including competitive telecommunications access, public safety and municipal data networks.

In 1993, we continued our growth through a partnership with Creative Information Systems Company (CISCO), the oldest independent provider of Computer Aided Dispatch/Records Management Services to the Law Enforcement, and Fire Service communities, including state, national, regional, and local crime network interfaces. By providing data communications and networking software development capabilities, we were able to offer unique solutions to integration challenges for our partner and their customers.

Our experience in the Cable TV industry continued by serving the System Integration needs of companies such as Time Warner Cable. By offering solutions enabled by our understanding of the industry and its needs, we developed unique systems and software. These served critical business functions by saving time, increasing efficiency, and reducing costs.

In 1996, we provided key personnel to Time Warner for initial deployment of their Internet Cable Modem product. This product would come to be known as Road Runner. Our personnel’s knowledge of the Internet, Unix and networking were key to the successful launch of the product line. We continue to provide integration and support services to Time Warner and Road Runner today.

Also in 1996, we developed a relationship with Cerulean Technology, Inc., who was acquired by Aether Systems, Inc. in 2000, that continued through most of 2002 in the Public Safety Wireless. Cerulean was the largest provider of PC-based Mobile Data Computer Software for law enforcement. CommSys provided critical capability in both software development for state and national crime network interfaces as well as integration and development services for legacy environments, local and regional crime systems and communication alternatives for private radio networks. Since then CommSys has completed over 50 crime database interfaces throughout North America.

In 1997, CommSys was named an IBM Networking Business Partner. IBM recognized our technical excellence in advanced technologies that were key to our customers' needs.

In 1998, CommSys was awarded a contract with Beaufort County Emergency Management to supply a new 911 automatic location database system. This redundant system provide caller ID and address information to dispatchers. CommSys has continuously support Beaufort County since May, 1990. In 2002, CommSys was contracted to provide an update to the automatic location database system to support Phase II of Wireless 911.

Also in 1999, Marconi Communications, formerly FORE Systems, named CommSys a partner. Marconi is a leading provider of Asynchronous Transfer Mode networking equipment used in the Enterprise, Carrier and Internet segments of the industry and looked to CommSys as a key partner because of our extensive experience in the broadband industry.

In 2000, CommSys was selected to serve on the NENA Technical Committee for determining ALI formats as well as participate in NCIC 2000 wireless project requirements in conjunction with a local public safety agency, the state of Wisconsin, and the FBI. CommSys was also selected to operate the Dayton Metro Internet Exchange (DMIX).

In 2001 CommSys was contracted by Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio to provide a Technical Reporting System to track, report, and analyze plant equipment and employee efficiency to help reduce their overhead and cost of operations.  Today, Time Warner has consolidated, real-time data at their fingertips to assist in proactive maintenance as well as customer support in solving operation and service issues.

In 2002, CommSys was contracted by Monroe County, Michigan, to provide an AVL and Phase II 911 solution for their agency.

In 2004, CommSys made a strategic decision to streamline our business operations and focus on the public safety market. Within public safety, business surrounds our standard solutions including our CJIS/CIC and AVL products and data conversion services, as well as some strategic custom integrated solutions. Our sales strategy concentrates of reselling through a channel of public safety software vendors with some direct agency sales where it makes sense.

Today CommSys remains strong and committed to the government industry's public safety sector providing services, products, and solutions to local, regional, and national public safety software vendors and agency customers.
